Sunshine danced through the trees as butterflies flew through the garden. Nearby, Judith Markeli crouched next to a pile of bricks that she meticulously painted light blue.
Markeli, the manager of the Yellow Deli in downtown Brunswick, is often involved in many projects related to the charming outdoor area of the restaurant. But it wasn’t that long ago that it was screeched to a halt.
“I’ve been very busy here lately. I did all the landscaping and redone the flower beds. I woke up one day and was very stiff. I just thought I would just take it easy and it would go away, ”she said.
But it didn’t. In fact, it got a lot worse.
“The next day I woke up and couldn’t move. I couldn’t get dressed. I was very desperate, “she recalled. “I was in tears.”
Then Markeli picked up the card from massage therapist Susanna Hughes, who spoke to Dr. Jen Heller works together at Heller Healthcare in Brunswick.
The receptionist sensed the urgency of the situation and caught up with Markeli immediately. And when she got there, the staff realized it was really bad.
“She was trembling in pain. It was a 10/10 all for them, ”recalled Dr. Jen Heller. “She was cold and pale. She was sweating. “
Markeli had her x-ray and what they revealed was shocking, even for a very skilled chiropractor like Heller.
“I thought holy cow. When people wake up with a “stiff neck” they may have a tilt of 5 degrees … Judiths was 40 degrees. It’s a big deal to have this without trauma. This was clearly affecting her nervous system. It was hard to get an X-ray at all, ”said Heller. “Her cervical vertebrae were so misaligned. In the neck this is a really significant shift. Their panes bulged. There was no movement. She was just locked up. “
Heller quickly formulated a plan that would use gentle adjustments to get Markeli’s spine back into place.
“DR. Jen was very gentle. She would make an adjustment and then wait,” said Markeli. “I really love the way she would hold my head after the adjustment. It has been very supportive of me and I really appreciate her is very careful. “
“I had to give your body time to adjust. I would wait five minutes between adjustments. It took a long time, but that’s exactly what we had to do, ”said Heller.
Markeli slowly began to find relief and movement. She was able to turn her head and over the course of a few weeks began to become her active self again.
“I was able to function again after two weeks,” recalled Markeli.
The experience made Markeli incredibly grateful for the art of chiropractic and, in particular, for Heller’s particular approach.
“I was so grateful. She really listened to me. I’ve been to many chiropractors over the years. There are a lot of people who just crack your back and hope for the best. But Dr. Jen was really careful, which I really appreciated, ”she said.
Heller is known locally for their skills and offers this kind of personal attention. In addition to her experience in chiropractic, her office offers massage therapies and holistic healing approaches. They have incorporated their practice into Golden Isles Functional Medicine, which offers both functional and regenerative medicine, hormone replacement therapy, nutritional counseling, and more. Together they have helped countless patients find a pain-free life.
And regardless of method, Markeli believes that Heller’s compassionate demeanor and sincere desire to set the tone for the healing.
“Your ability to listen and know how to treat each patient is really a great gift,” said Markeli with a smile.
