SARASOTA, Florida (WFLA) – Families were lined up outside a chiropractor’s office in Venice, Florida Monday night in hopes of receiving medical exemption forms for their children in response to Sarasota County’s new school mask mandate.
The mask mandate in Sarasota County’s schools went into effect Monday, and while the district says compliance has been good so far, they have some challenges with reviewing medical exception forms. While the district is working through the exemptions to ensure they are valid and correct, some parents raise concerns with the local chiropractor, who confirms that he has signed dozens of exception forms in the past week.

Paulina Testerman was in disbelief when she heard claims that Twin Palms Chiropractic was offering mask exemptions to anyone who wanted one. Her family went to check things out for themselves.
“We went in and out, came in, signed a clipboard, and gave a sheet,” Testerman said. “Nobody asked to see our children. The forms were pre-signed, there was a pile behind the counter and they were simply handed out. “
District officials say they are aware of the situation and are concerned about the allegations they see online.

“We have a number of exemption forms from this practice,” said Craig Maniglia of Sarasota County Schools. “You are being examined. They were handed over to our lawyers. “
The WFLA spoke to Dr. Dan Busch in front of his law office to get his opinion.
“It’s not a political thing. I’m not an anti-mask person or an anti-vax person, but I am an advocate of freedom and choice, ”said Dr. Bush.
The chiropractor said his policy is to meet with the student and his legal guardian to see if they are eligible for an exemption or not.
“Myself, I will tell you that I have not granted exceptions to any parents I have not met with,” said Busch.
When Dr. When asked Busch what diagnosis chiropractors can make when it comes to mask exemption, he replied, “It’s every Florida licensed health practitioner. Your dentist could do this, your psychiatrist could do this, your psychologist could do this, ”he explained. “You’ve looked at things like shortness of breath, hypoxia, asthma, anxiety, depression – there are many qualifying conditions.”
Testerman says she wants to know why parents don’t just go to their pediatrician for a mask release.
“This answer is really very simple. Pediatricians are trained to diagnose and treat children and they recognize the dangers of COVID, “she said. “Signing a mask waiver would violate one of your tenants’ Hippocratic oaths [to] not hurt.”
