The Rooftop Cinema Membership’s new drive-in theater is rolling into the EaDo neighborhood of Houston
Do you need a family home evening and a semblance of normalcy at a time of social distancing? Enjoy a blast from the past that is well suited for the current circumstances – the old-fashioned drive-in theater – at the new Rooftop Cinema Club location in Houston.
The company will be previewing its new venue called The Drive-In at EaDo in December before hosting its grand opening in January, according to a release. As the name suggests, the new drive-in theater is located in the East Downtown Management District of Houston, commonly known as EaDo.
The new venue will open on December 5th at 2300 Runnels St.
The Rooftop Cinema Club announced last month that it would be leaving its former drive-through location in Sawyer Yards and playing its final film on location this past weekend.
“After searching high and low for a new drive-in theater, we are thrilled to have found such a beautiful place where we can get the most out of our Sawyer Yards venue,” said Gerry Cottle, owner and founder of Cinema Club on the roof. “We look forward to bringing more love, peace and great film to the Houstonians at this much-needed time.”
The drive-in at EaDo is replacing Space City Shows, a pop-up drive-in movie experience that opened in September. Space City Shows was Houston’s first black-owned drive-in theater.
“We were so grateful to the community for supporting our pop-up drive-in, and I’m grateful that we left what we started in very good hands,” said Khairi Sharif, founder of Space City Shows . “The Rooftop Cinema Club shares a similar passion and purpose for outdoor cinema coupled with a unique experience, and as I work on my next project I am excited to see where they take it.”
In December, when the Rooftop Cinema Club moves into its new space, moviegoers will benefit from the prices for “Soft Launch”.
Soft launch ticket prices:
Weekend (Friday – Sunday)
- The Movie Buddy $ 22 – reserves a vehicle for up to two guests
- The Movie Squad $ 27 – reserves a vehicle for three or more guests
Weekday (Monday – Thursday)
- The Movie Buddy $ 18 – reserves a vehicle for up to two guests
- The Movie Squad $ 24 – reserves a vehicle for three or more guests
The drive-in at EaDo is open seven days a week. The gates open one hour before the first screening and 30 minutes before the second. Parking is first come, first served, and guests are escorted by ushers upon arrival.
Movies are projected onto a 40-foot screen, while audio is carried over an FM radio signal.
An on-site concession stand offers the usual selection of movie theater snacks, namely popcorn, candy, and soda, while the Houston food trucks The Burger Joint and El Patio have additional offerings. Toilets are available on site.
Community screenings at the EaDo drive-in location take place every second Sunday. Tickets cost only $ 5 per vehicle regardless of occupancy, meaning more Houstoners can spend an evening at The Drive-In. The December ticket proceeds will benefit the Houston Food Bank. There is also a donation box on site where you can drop off groceries from the grocery bank’s most needed items list.
